About Mahua & Ingredients

What does Mahua taste like?

Mahua flowers have a naturally sweet, honey-like taste with light floral notes. When shade-dehydrated, their flavour deepens, making them perfect for laddoos, cookies, teas, syrups, or even eaten like raisins. Traditionally, they are also used in chutneys and other local recipes.

How is Mahua different from other forest flowers?

Mahua is unique because it is both food and medicine. Rich in natural sugars, vitamins, and minerals, it has been a lifeline for tribal communities during lean seasons. Unlike most forest flowers which are rarely edible, Mahua has played an integral role in food and cultural traditions.

Why have I never heard of Mahua before?

Most people know Mahua only for its use in local liquor. Over time, this overshadowed its food identity. During colonial times, its nutritious role was forgotten, and it became narrowly associated with alcohol. Jai Jungle is reviving Mahua’s original place as a nutritious superfood and everyday wellness ingredient.

Is Mahua safe for children and elderly people?

Yes. In moderation, Mahua can be consumed by all age groups as food or infusion. Tribal families traditionally give Mahua laddoos or tea to children and elders during summer for cooling and energy.

Does Mahua have caffeine?

No. Mahua is naturally caffeine-free, making it suitable for daily use.

How are Mahua flowers collected and processed?

Mahua flowers are handpicked during early spring. At Jai Jungle, they are collected usingfood-grade nets, which prevent contamination from soil and animals. The stamens are carefully removed, and the petals are shade-dehydrated to preserve nutrients, colour, and aroma. The flowers are then hygienically sorted, graded, and packed by trained tribal women.

What makes shade-dehydrated Mahua better than sun-dried?

Shade-dehydration ensures better colour, aroma, and nutrient retention compared to sundrying, which can bleach petals and degrade nutrients. Local, open-floor Mahua often gets contaminated with dust, insects, or animal waste — making it unsafe. Jai Jungle usesfood-grade collection nets and dehydration systemsto ensure clean, safe, and nutritious flowers.

Does Mahua lose its nutrients after drying?

No. Shade-dehydration only reduces water content. It concentrates natural sugars, vitamins, and minerals, making dried Mahua more nutrient-dense.

How long can Mahua-based products be stored?

Most Mahua-based products have a shelf life of 12–18 months, provided they are stored in a cool, dry place
